A leader of ruling party’s associate wing Swechasebak League was shot dead in board daylight in Chittagong city’s New Market area on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Ibrahim Manik, 30, son of Hanif Sawdagor, a fish trader and also a resident of Madarbari-Sadarghat area’s Sahebpara, said police sources.Police arrested one Rana, 28, in this connection.“Ibrahim was the president of Sadarghat unit of Swechasebak League,” said Sadhan Das, joint convener of city’s Andarkillah unit of Swechasebak League.
Kotwali Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jasim Uddin told Dhaka Tribune: “The incident took place in front of GPO office at New Market area around 12:00pm.”
“Rana operates in city’s Madarbari area and accused at least in 10 cases,” said the OC.
Police suspects the shooting was pre-planned.
“Locals and traffic police found Ibrahim in a pool of blood on the footpath. He was whisked off at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in critical condition, and later on-duty doctors pronounced him dead,” the OC said.“Rana and Ibarahim had a long standing rivalry over the possession of a shop originally owned by Rana’s maternal uncle. Ibrahim later filed a case over the rivalry”, he said.A mobile phone, and an unused 7.65-bore bullet were recovered from the spot.CMCH Police Outpost’s In-Charge (IC) Inspector Jahirul Islam said a bullet hit Ibrahim on his left thigh and he probably died because of losing huge amount of blood.“The body has been sent to CMC morgue for autopsy,” he said.Slain Ibrahim’s younger brother Yusuf Ratan told Dhaka Tribune that “criminal” Rana attempted to extort his brother and threatened Ibrahim with dire consequence.
