Protest in London against harassment of journalists in Bangladesh

London: A protest of UK-based journalists was held on 16 January in Altab Ali Park, East London, against the persecution of journalists in Bangladesh.

Richard Bourne, a senior journalist and member of the executive committee of the Commonwealth Journalists Association, spoke as the chief guest at the event, which was presided over by Dr. Azizul Ambya and moderated by Kamrul I. Russell. Bourne demanded the release of imprisoned journalists in Bangladesh.

Commonwealth Journalist Association Vice President Syed Nahas Pasha, former BBC journalist Shamim Chowdhury, Barrister Tania Amir, veteran freedom fighter Dewan Gous Sultan, veteran freedom fighter Khalil Kazi OBE, senior journalist Urmee Mazher, London Bangla Press Club’s Md. Rezaul Karim Mridha, Chabbishe TV’s Abdul Ahad Chowdhury, UK Bangla Reporters Unity President Sajidur Rahman and Vice President Jamal Khan, journalists Jewel Raj, Nazrul Islam Akib, Imdadun Khan, Mifatul Noor and others.

Speakers said that in Bangladesh, journalists have been detained for several months in murder cases; bail is not being given. A case has been filed against about 160 journalists. Journalists are worried about it. The speakers said that even though Dr Yunus promised the false cases of the journalists were to be withdrawn, the torture continued. This cannot be accepted at all. The government was requested to release them. The organisers said the movement will continue if the journalists are not released.
