London: Labour MP Apsana Begum has been elected as the new Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Bangladesh. The announcement came during the APPG’s inaugural meeting following the July 2024 General Election.
Apsana Begum MP, who represents the constituency of Poplar and Limehouse, brings a personal connection to the role as a daughter of Bengali migrants. Her election signifies strengthening ties between the UK Parliament and Bangladesh at a crucial time for both nations.
Speaking after her election, Begum expressed her enthusiasm for the role: “As the daughter of Bangladeshi migrants, I’m delighted to be elected Chair of the APPG on Bangladesh. From the devastating impact of climate change to the quest for accountability and democratic freedom, I look forward to working with Members across both Houses and all parties on encouraging a greater understanding of Bangladesh – along with providing a conduit for the Bangladeshi community here in the UK.”
The APPG on Bangladesh serves as a cross-party forum for parliamentarians to discuss and engage with issues relating to Bangladesh, promote bilateral relations and address concerns of the British Bengali community. Under Apsana Begum’s leadership, the group is expected to focus on key challenges facing Bangladesh, including climate change impacts, democratic governance and strengthening UK-Bangladesh relationships.
The appointment comes at a significant time when Bangladesh faces numerous challenges and opportunities on the global stage, particularly in areas of climate resilience, economic development and democratic reforms.
