LONDON, July 29, 2024 – In a powerful show of solidarity, thousands gathered today in front of the British Parliament to protest recent violence and destruction in Bangladesh. The rally, organised by the UK Awami League, drew support from various progressive social, cultural, and human rights organisations.
Several Members of Parliament, including Deputy Speaker Caroline Knox and State Minister Jim McMahon, met with rally organisers to discuss the current situation in Bangladesh. A memorandum was presented, and the MPs assured they would address the matter seriously.
Syed Sajidur Rahman Faruk, General Secretary of the UK Awami League, presided over the event, with Sultan Mahmud Shariff, the organisation’s President, serving as chair. Speakers condemned the recent unrest, which they claim was orchestrated by right-wing BNP and Islamist Jamaat groups under the guise of student protests.
“Expatriates in the UK have always stood by Bangladesh in difficult times,” stated Sultan Mahmud Shariff. “Today’s gathering proves this once again. We are here to inform British Parliament members about the recent events and their implications.”
The rally highlighted concerns about alleged attempts to destabilize Bangladesh’s progress and development. Organisers emphasized their commitment to peace and prosperity, calling for a thorough investigation into recent incidents. This demonstration underscores the deep connections between the UK’s Bangladeshi community and their homeland, as well as their dedication to promoting stability and progress in Bangladesh.
