London: In response to the recent turmoil in Bangladesh, the United Kingdom has called for a United Nations-led investigation into the events of the past few weeks. This request comes amid unprecedented levels of violence and tragic loss of life in Bangladesh.
Rushanara Ali MP, UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, expressed her condolences to those affected by the unrest. “My thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones and all those affected,” she stated.
The UK government’s stance was further reinforced by Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who acknowledged the announcement of a transitional period by Bangladesh’s Chief of Army Staff. Lammy urged all sides to “work together to end the violence, restore calm, deescalate the situation and prevent any further loss of life.”
Both officials emphasised the need for a “full and independent UN-led investigation” into the recent events. The UK government believes such an inquiry is crucial to ensuring a peaceful and democratic future for Bangladesh.
The statements also highlighted the deep people-to-people links and shared Commonwealth values between the UK and Bangladesh, underscoring the importance of the situation to British officials.
As the international community closely watches the developments in Bangladesh, the UK’s call for a UN-led investigation may prompt further diplomatic discussions and potentially influence the course of events in the country.
