49th National Mourning Day observed in East London amid concerns over recent events in Bangladesh

Londonঃ On 29 August 2024, the 49th National Mourning Day was solemnly observed at a gathering in East London. Organised by the 7 March Foundation, the event focused on recent disturbing developments in Bangladesh, including the destruction of the Bangabandhu Museum and the removal of his portraits from public institutions.

Nooruddin Ahmed, Chair of the organisation, condemned these acts and called for justice. He stressed the importance of preserving Bangabandhu’s legacy as the father of the nation and expressed concern over the country’s direction, urging continued reflection on the nation’s political future.

Speakers highlighted Bangabandhu’s significance in Bangladesh’s history and criticised recent actions that undermined his legacy. They called for unity and respect for all who contributed to the country’s independence, emphasising the need to uphold the spirit and values of the Liberation War.

The event concluded with calls to resist fundamentalism and protect the historical significance of figures like Bangabandhu, ensuring their rightful place in the nation’s history.

The meeting was chaired by Nooruddin Ahmed. Speakers included Ansar Ahmed Ullah, Secretary of the organisation, Rajonuddin Jalal of Connect Community Network, Salim Ullah, Vice Chair of All European Bangabandhu Parishad, Akikur Rahman, anti-racist activist of the 1970s and a member of Bangladesh Youth Association, Ala Miah Azad Choudhury, community activist and a member of Bangladesh Youth League, Former Cllr Mohammed Shahid Ali, of the Tajuddin Foundation, Syed Enamul Islam, former Chair of the UK Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, S M Mustafizur Rahman, General Secretary of All European Bangabandhu Parishad, Jamal Ahmed Khan of 7 March Foundation amongst others.
