London: representatives gathered at The Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, to observe the International Day of UN Peacekeepers with a wreath-laying ceremony honouring those who serve in United Nations missions worldwide.
Among those paying tribute was Mozmil Hussain, representing the United Nations Association Groups, from Eastbourne. The ceremony recognised the dedication and sacrifice of more than 53,000 UN peacekeepers currently deployed in conflict-affected and high-risk regions across the globe.
The event also remembered the 4,496 peacekeepers from 134 countries who have lost their lives while serving under the UN flag since peacekeeping operations were established. The annual observance highlights the vital contribution made by UN peacekeepers in promoting stability, protecting civilians and supporting communities affected by conflict and crisis.
