Hindu Aid UK delivers relief to victims in Avoynagar, Jessore

London: On 11th June 2025, Hindu Aid UK undertook a crucial humanitarian relief mission to assist victims of recent communal violence in Avoynagar, a village in the Jessore District of Bangladesh. This initiative was in response to a series of brutal attacks targeting the local Hindu community, which left families devastated, homes destroyed, and sacred spaces desecrated.

As part of this emergency response, a total of 230,000 Bangladeshi Taka was distributed among 23 severely affected families, providing them with crucial financial assistance to begin rebuilding their lives. A portion of the funds was also allocated to restore the village temple, a spiritual and cultural cornerstone of the community that had also sustained damage during the violence.

The relief operation was conducted under the supervision of Mr. Anupam Roy, a respected social activist known for his advocacy on behalf of religious minorities in Bangladesh. His leadership ensured that aid distribution was conducted with transparency, fairness, and compassion.

Also present at the event was Mr. Subrata Thakur, the former Chair of Kashiani Upazila, Gopalganj District, and a descendant of Harichand Thakur, the 19th-century spiritual leader and founder of the Matua Mahasangha. This religious and social movement played a crucial role in uplifting the Namashudra and other marginalised Hindu castes in southern Bengal.

Mr. Thakur’s presence served as a profound symbol of solidarity and historical continuity. It also evoked the legacy of Harichand Thakur, whose teachings continue to inspire resilience and equality among millions. Notably, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the birthplace of Harichand Thakur in Orakandi, Gopalganj, on 27th March 2021, where he performed puja and paid homage to the enduring contributions of the Matua community to spiritual and social life in the region.

The arrival of the relief and the distinguished guests was met with deep gratitude by residents. Members of the Matua community celebrated the occasion with traditional instruments such as Dungkha and Kashore, along with joyful chanting of “Hari Bol”—a devotional mantra symbolising collective strength, spiritual resolve, and hope.

“This initiative was not just about providing material aid—it was about restoring dignity, reaffirming solidarity, and offering hope,” said a Hindu Aid UK spokesperson.
