London: The 9th edition of the London Bengali Film Festival (LBFF) is set to take place from April 22 to April 26, 2026, reaffirming its status as Europe’s premier platform for Bengali cinema. This year’s festival will be hosted across three key venues: Genesis Cinema, BLOC Cinema at Queen Mary University, and Metro Cinema in Harrow.
Under the theme “Identity Through a New Lens,” the festival will explore narratives cantered on belonging, memory, gender, migration, and the evolving South Asian identity. Supported by the BFI Film Audience Network and funded through the National Lottery, LBFF aims to foster cultural dialogue and showcase diverse stories from Bangladesh, India, the UK, the USA, and Spain.
The curated program features thirteen films, including fiction, documentaries, animation, and shorts in multiple languages such as Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, and Spanish. Highlights include the UK premiere of the urban thriller Pressure Cooker, the silent film Nirvana, and the ensemble drama Pinjar (The Cage). Special segments will spotlight queer cinema, featuring films like Jasmine that Blooms in Autumn and Crossing the Desert, and a tribute to Bengali icon Kanan Devi with the animated feature Sultana’s Dream.
The festival also emphasises community engagement, targeting British Bangladeshis, older women, LGBTQIA+ South Asians, and youth through multilingual programming and partnerships with community organisations. Industry events will facilitate networking among emerging filmmakers and established professionals.
Founded in 2016 by the UK charity Positive Action Through Creativity, LBFF continues to serve as a vital cultural bridge for the Bengali diaspora, celebrating heritage while challenging mainstream norms.
