UK Committee observed the 32nd death anniversary of Shahid Janani Jahanara Imam

London: The UK Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee observed the 32nd death anniversary of Shahid Janani Jahanara Imam with a discussion event on Friday, 26 June 2026, at its own premises in east London.

The event was chaired by its President Syed Enamul Islam and conducted by Asst General Secretary Shah Mustafijur Rahman Belal.

Amongst the speakers were chief guest UK Committee’s advisor and former minister Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury, special guest Bir Muktijudda Shahidul Alam Bablu, presidium member Ganatontri Party, Cllr Ajanta Deb Roy, Co-ordinator, UK Jagaron Monch, Central Committee’s Joint Secretary Tapas Kanti Baul, Advisor Harmuz Ali, founding member of UK Committee Shadhin Khasru, Shushanta Das Gupta, Awami League leader, Syed Ehsan, London Awami League leader and UK Committee’s Dr Anisur Rahman Anis.

The discussion topic was “Looking Back: The 2013 Mass Uprising (Shahbag Movement) and Shahid Janani Jahanara Imam”. Speakers reflected on her legacy, her role in the 1971 Liberation War, and how her decades-long campaign for justice and the “Gono Adalat” movement directly inspired the formation and spirit of Gono Jagaron Moncho in 2013. Her demand for a people’s court became the blueprint for Shahbag’s call for the trial of war criminals.

“Jahanara Imam’s courage continued to inspire us. The UK diaspora gathered to remember her sacrifice and discuss how Shahbag’s spirit traced back to her vision,” said a spokesperson for the UK Nirmul Committee. Shahid Janani Jahanara Imam was known as the “Mother of Martyrs”. Her 1992 Gono Adalat movement laid the ideological foundation for the 2013 Gono Jagaron Moncho at Shahbag.
